Appendix A Weekly Schedule

This list records what we have done each week in lectures. It also has tentative plans for upcoming weeks, which of course become less reliable the further in the future you go. For brief descriptions of examples from the problems classes, see Appendix C.

Week 1: October 1–4.

  • Introduction to the unit, administrative stuff.
  • Nearly complete Section 1.1, the first (and relatively long) section in Chapter 1. This is mostly a review of material from Analysis 2A, but is extremely important for everything that follows.
  • Problem Sheet 1 due 4 October at 3pm, either in class or in the pigeon hole in 4W. This is an optional problem sheet on Analysis 1 revision, but I strongly encourage you to look at it if you are feeling rusty with these concepts.
  • Problem Sheet 2 released.

Week 2: October 8–11.

  • Finish Section 1.1 as well as the next two sections Section 1.2 and Section 1.3. This is still (essentially) review from Analysis 2A, and we will not have time to give all of the proofs, although some may show up as as potential ‘problems’ in problems classes.
  • Problem Sheet 2 due 11 October at 3pm, either in class or in the pigeon hole in 4W.

Week 3: October 15–18.

Week 4: October 22–25.

Week 5: October 29 – November 1.

Week 6: October 5–8.

Week 7: November 12–15.

Week 8: November 19–22.

Week 9: November 26–29.

Week 10: December 5–8.

Week 11: December 12–15.

  • Finish Section 5.2 and hence Chapter 5. Also finish Section 6.1, and hence the examinable portion of Chapter 6. We won’t talk much at all about about Section 6.2, which is an exciting – but non-examinable – application of Section 6.1.
  • Problem Sheet 11 due 15 December at 3pm, either in class or in the pigeon hole in 4W. Can also email a pdf, which I will immediately print. I will email you scans of the marked sheets next week.

Revision Week: January 7–10.

Based on the discussion in the Week 11 problems class, the current plan is the following, with all of the sessions being recorded.
Tuesday
An overview lecture where we write a bunch of jargon from the unit on the board, trying to organise it somehow and to draw connections.
Wednesday
A second overview lecture focused on other aspects of the unit, in particular the various results that we have at our disposal.
Friday
Go through problem sheet or past exam questions which students suggest (e.g. over email) before Friday at 9am. We will do any problem sheet questions first, so that students not wanting to see questions from past exams can simply leave early.
