Section B.2 Problem Sheet 2
Due 20 February at 4pm, either in class or in the pigeon hole in 4W.
This problem sheet is about getting comfortable with some of the types of calculations we will need to do in the unit, as well as the notation we will use. Exercise 2.1.1 asks you to write out various linear-algebra-type expressions using the summation convention, Exercise 2.2.1 and Exercise 2.2.2 asks you to calculate derivatives of some basic functions. Finally, Exercise 2.3.1 and Exercise 2.3.2 ask you to differentiate some more complicated functions using the chain rule.
If you are already quite confident with these sorts of calculations, and want a challenge, take a look at the (very much unassigned) Exercise 2.3.3.
Please feel free to email me, or drop by office hours (Wednesdays 1:15–2:05 in 4W 1.12). I am also more than happy to meet one-on-one or in a small group.
