Appendix A Weekly schedule
This list below records what we have done each week, as well as tentative plans for upcoming weeks. The further in the future, the less reliable these predictions will be!
Week 1: 4–6 February.
- Informal introduction to the unit.
- Introduce the maximum principle with Chapter 1.
Week 2: 11–13 February.
- Chapter 2 up through the start of Section 2.6. This is almost but not entirely revision of material you have seen before, although sometimes using different notation.
- Problem Sheet 1 due 13 February at 4pm, either in class or in the pigeon hole in 4W.
Week 3: 18–20 February.
- Nearly finish Chapter 2 with Section 2.7 on optimisation, Section 2.8 on compactness and Section 2.9 on vector calculus.
- Problem Sheet 2 due 20 February at 4pm, either in class or in the pigeon hole in 4W.
Week 4: 25–27 February.
- Formally introduce PDEs and some associated jargon in Section 2.10, and then embark on Chapter 3 with Section 3.1 and Section 3.2.
- Problem Sheet 3 due 27 February at 4pm, either in class or in the pigeon hole in 4W.
Week 5: 4–6 March.
- Complete Section 3.3 and hence Chapter 3.
- Problem Sheet 4 due 6 March at 4pm, either in class or in the pigeon hole in 4W.
Week 6: 11–13 March.
- Problem Sheet 5 due 13 March at 4pm, either in class or in the pigeon hole in 4W.
Week 7: 18–20 March.
- Problem Sheet 6 due 20 March at 4pm, either in class or in the pigeon hole in 4W.
Week 8: 25–27 March.
- Problem Sheet 7 due 27 March at 4pm, either in class or in the pigeon hole in 4W.
Week 9: 1–3 April.
- Finish Chapter 5.
- Problem Sheet 8 due 3 April at 4pm, either in class or in the pigeon hole in 4W.
Week 10: 22–24 April.
- Begin Chapter 6, including Section 6.1, Section 6.2, and ideally the statement of the main result in Section 6.3.
- Problem Sheet 9 due 24 April at 4pm, either in class or in the pigeon hole in 4W.
Week 11: 29 April – 2 May.
- Finish Section 6.3, which is the last examinable section of Chapter 6.
- Start revision with a summary of the results from Chapter 3.
- Continue revision with a discussion of tricks for nonlinear problems.
- Problem Sheet 10 due 10 May at 4pm, either in class or in the pigeon hole in 4W.
Revision Week: 6–8 May.

In past years the most popular thing has been going over old exam questions, but I am very open to other suggestions.
