Section G.7 The 2020 exam

This exam was written by me. For some reason, the exam paper is not available on the library website, although the solutions are available. I have put a version of the exam paper on Moodle.
The format for this and other Year 3–5 exams in Semester 2 of 2020 was to have the usual ‘4 choose 3’ 20 mark questions, followed by a mandatory fifth question worth 15 marks, which was to be ‘open ended’. As you know, this is not the format for this year’s exam. I have turned the ‘open ended’ question into the ‘extended problem’ in Exercises 3.4 and Exercises 4.6.
Starting in 2021, I have organised Chapter 4 slightly differently. A side-effect is that Question 3(b) on this exam significantly is now harder than it was in 2020, while Question 3(c) is now significantly easier than it was in 2020.
Finally, there is a small inconsistency between the exam paper and the solution to Q2(d)(i). The exam paper says that \(\Delta u - u^{10} = 1\text{,}\) while the solutions have \(\Delta u - u^{10} = 0\text{.}\) Thankfully this makes no real difference, since in either case we have \(\Delta u = g(u)\) where \(g\) is a \(C^1\) non-negative function; compare with Exercise 5.1.2.
